2-2 比較群は同等でなければなりません

治療比較群の人々に、比較される治療以外の点で異なるところがあれば、治療の明らかな効果は、実際の治療効果ではなくこれらの差を反映している可能性があります。比較群の人々の特徴の差によって、実際よりも大きいあるいは小さいと考えられる治療効果の推定値になる可能性があります。乱数に割りつけること(コインを投げるのと同様。ランダム化ともいう)で異なる治療に人々を割り付けるなどの方法は、比較する群が、測定された特徴と測定されていない特徴に関して同等であることを保証する最善の方法です。

ランダム化(無作為化)されていない治療比較の結果を信頼するのは慎重にしてください(例えば、比較される人がどちらの治療を受けるか選択した場合)。比較群の特徴が同等であると確信できない場合は特に注意してください。人々が治療比較群に無作為に割り付けられていなかった場合、実際よりも大きいあるいは小さいと考えられる治療効果の推定値となった可能性がある群間に重大な差があったかどうか尋ねてください。
